Savoring Authentic Sri Lankan Cuisine: Pol Rotti with Katta Sambol and Spicy Chicken Curry at Rivera

I recently visited Rivera Resort in Batticaloa and had an exceptional dining experience that I cannot recommend highly enough. The Pol Rotti with Katta Sambal, Prawns Curry, and Chicken Curry were nothing short of outstanding.

The Delight of Pol Rotti

Sri Lankan Pol Rotti is such a delicious dish that doesn’t use any leavening ingredients such as baking powder or baking soda, making it easy to whip up in no time. If you are making a curry, this amazing and simple dish is a must-have. Pol Rotti is basically flatbread with coconut, often including chopped red onion and chili, although you can make it plain. The inclusions make it really tasty and give it a good crunch.

We, as Sri Lankans, eat Pol Rotti a lot for breakfast, but you can definitely enjoy it for lunch and dinner as well. Because it’s very easy to make, it is a go-to dish to whip up in the morning.

An Exceptional Dining Experience

At Rivera Resort, the Pol Rotti was served hot and crispy, bursting with flavor, and paired perfectly with the Katta Sambal. This sambal was slightly different from the usual Sri Lankan version; it was wetter and juicier, likely due to a slight grinding, which enhanced its overall taste and made it a delightful accompaniment to the rotti.

Both the Prawns Curry and Chicken Curry were rich, flavorful, and complemented the Pol Rotti beautifully. The prawns were succulent and fresh, cooked to perfection in a spicy, aromatic gravy that highlighted their natural sweetness. The chicken was tender and juicy, enveloped in a well-seasoned, savory gravy. The combination of these curries with the Pol Rotti was simply divine, creating a memorable culinary experience that left me wanting more. The Essence of Home-Cooked Comfort

The food at Rivera Resort feels like a comforting, homemade meal, prepared with care and meticulous attention to detail. The authentic flavors and high-quality ingredients used are evident in every bite. Additionally, the Crab Curry with Pittu was another standout dish, one of the best I have ever tasted in Sri Lanka, further showcasing the culinary expertise at Rivera Resort.
