Beyond the Sand: Unveiling the Thrills of a Dubai Desert Safari

Embarking on the desert safari adventure with Oasis Palm Tourism heightened our anticipation for a thrilling experience in the vast expanse of Dubai's golden dunes. Our base at Citymax in Bur Dubai served as the starting point, and as the clock struck 3:00 p.m., a message from our assigned driver signaled the commencement of our desert expedition. Promptly reaching the hotel parking area, we were greeted by a seasoned safari driving expert behind the wheel of a powerful Toyota Land Cruiser V8, courtesy of the tour company. With excitement building, we hopped into the comfortable vehicle, ready for a journey that promised not only the allure of the desert but also the novelty of my first Land Cruiser V8 ride. As the engine roared to life, our skilled driver informed us of the hour-long road ahead, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure amid the mesmerizing landscapes of Dubai.

After traversing the desert-side road for approximately 40 minutes, our skilled driver decided it was time for a brief pause, and we found ourselves at an unexpected oasis in the form of a charming shop nestled amidst the vast expanse. This quaint desert-side establishment offered more than just respite; it was a treasure trove of Dubai souvenirs and assorted items. Entering the shop, we were greeted by enthusiastic sellers showcasing an array of items, with a particular highlight being the desert safari scarfs.

Available in two elegant combinations – black and white, or red and white – these scarfs not only served as stylish accessories but also had practical applications. Intrigued, we decided to indulge in this local experience, and as we agreed to purchase a scarf, the helpful salespersons guided us through the process of donning the traditional Arab headgear known as the ghutra. This distinctive scarf, donned primarily by men in the UAE, serves as a shield against the sun, dust, and sandstorms, offering both cultural significance and practical utility. For the ladies, the shop also featured unique jewelry designed to be worn over the scarf, adding a touch of traditional elegance to the desert safari experience.

Resuming our journey after a refreshing break, the Land Cruiser effortlessly cut through the desert terrain, providing us with an exhilarating ride. The anticipation heightened as we approached the heart of the desert safari experience. Upon arrival, the vast expanse before us was alive with activity—numerous Land Cruisers, like our own, queued up at the entrance gate. It was a bustling scene, indicative of the popularity of this desert adventure. The sight of more than a hundred Land Cruisers filled with eager tourists underscored the magnitude of the experience that awaited us. As our Land Cruiser approached the entrance gate, our skilled driver expertly maneuvered the vehicle to a stop. Stepping out, he swiftly went to work, reducing the tire pressure of the Land Cruiser—an essential adjustment for navigating the challenging and dynamic terrain of the desert sands that lay ahead. The meticulous preparation heightened our sense of anticipation for the imminent desert safari, promising an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Dubai desert.

As we ventured deeper into the heart of the safari desert, the anticipation in the air was palpable. The driver's inquiry about motion sickness hinted at the adventurous ride that lay ahead. Without delay, the Land Cruiser began its dynamic journey, and as the wheels hit the undulating dunes, the vehicle swayed and bounced to the beat of the desert terrain. The driver, sensing our eagerness, set the mood by playing a lively desert safari song, the rhythmic melodies echoing within the confines of the Land Cruiser. Assured that none of us were prone to motion sickness, he gradually accelerated, skillfully navigating the sandy landscape. The thrill intensified as he executed sudden turns, creating mesmerizing sprays of sand against the windshield, promptly cleared by the rhythmic sweep of the wipers. 

After an exhilarating drive, the Land Cruiser came to a serene stop in the heart of the desert, offering a breathtaking panorama of the sun setting over the dunes. Gathering around, we descended from the vehicle, cameras in hand, capturing the mesmerizing hues of the desert at dusk. The driver, with a practiced ease, popped open the Land Cruiser's hood, dissipating the heat generated by the powerful engine during our adrenaline-fueled adventure, revealing the impressive intensity of the desert safari experience in Dubai.

With memories of the captivating desert sunset etched in our cameras, we reluctantly left the picturesque spot and reboarded the Land Cruiser. The driver, sensing the need for a more leisurely pace, continued the safari with a serene drive through the dunes. As we approached the exit point, the Land Cruiser seamlessly transitioned onto the road leading to the desert safari camp. A brief stop at a tire shop marked our return to regular road conditions. The driver meticulously adjusted the tire pressure, ensuring a smooth ride ahead. The pause allowed us to stretch our legs and appreciate the transition from the rugged desert landscape to the more settled surroundings.

Thirty minutes later, we arrived at the parking stop of the OASIS PALM desert safari camp. Awaiting us was another Land Cruiser, ready to transport us deeper into the heart of the desert safari experience. The seamless coordination and attention to detail demonstrated by the driver and the tour company added an extra layer of professionalism to the entire adventure, promising more surprises and delights as we ventured into the heart of the desert safari camp.



Upon arrival at the entrance of the OASIS PALM desert safari camp, the Land Cruiser gently came to a halt, and a friendly staff member warmly greeted us. He extended a warm welcome and shared exciting options available at the camp. One intriguing suggestion caught our attention - an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) ride, offering an exhilarating way to explore the desert terrain. Although not initially included in our tour package, the idea appealed to us, and we decided to give it a try. Engaging in a friendly negotiation with the staff, we found them to be accommodating, offering us a fantastic deal since we had already booked the camp experience with them. With the agreement settled, we eagerly opted for the ATV ride, selecting three bikes for our group of six. The prospect of a 20-minute ride, with each person enjoying 10 minutes behind the wheel, promised an added dimension of adventure to our desert safari experience. Little did we know, this impromptu decision would lead to a thrilling escapade through the dunes, creating lasting memories in the heart of the Dubai desert.

Following the exhilarating ATV ride, we eagerly ventured into the Camel Safari area of the OASIS PALM desert safari camp. The prospect of a camel ride added a touch of traditional charm to our desert adventure. As we embarked on the short 5-minute camel journey. 

 The diversity of experiences, from the adrenaline-fueled ATV ride to the more traditional camel journey, added a unique flavor to our desert safari, creating a mosaic of memories that would stay with us long after we left the camp. With a sense of fulfillment, we made our way into the heart of the camp, ready to explore the other offerings and savor the remaining moments of our Dubai desert safari experience.

Stepping into the heart of the camp, we found ourselves in the welcoming entrance gathering area. The ambiance was infused with the rich aroma of Arabian coffee, and we were graciously invited to partake in this cultural ritual. Accompanying the coffee was a famous Arabic sweet, possibly 'lukaimat,' adding a delightful touch to our desert experience. Savoring the flavors, we moved further into the camp where a knowledgeable guide awaited us. 

With warmth and enthusiasm, he provided insights into the camp's offerings and outlined the agenda for the day. Leading us to the seating area, he showcased our group's designated spot. Two options lay before us: the first, a standard seating arrangement where plush pillows adorned the floor around a central table. This option involved a self-service buffet for all meals and drinks. Alternatively, there was a more luxurious choice – the private seating area featuring comfortable sofas, with all meals and drinks served by the camp staff. This upgrade, however, came at an additional cost. Considering the desire for a more immersive and communal experience, we opted for the normal pillow seating, ready to indulge in the authentic atmosphere and delicious offerings of the desert camp.

Settling comfortably into our designated pillow seating, we wasted no time immersing ourselves in the offerings of the camp. Eager to quench our thirst, we made our way to the designated drink station where we were delighted to find an array of unlimited soft drinks and refreshing water bottles. The freedom to indulge in these beverages at our leisure added a refreshing touch to the evening. With drinks in hand, our attention turned to the buffet area, where a tempting spread of starters awaited us. From delectable appetizers to flavorful bites, the culinary offerings showcased the rich and diverse flavors of Arabian cuisine. The self-service approach allowed us to curate our own dining experience, fostering a sense of exploration and discovery as we savored the first glimpses of the gastronomic delights the desert safari camp had to offer.

Among the assortment of starters laid out on the buffet, one familiar treat that stood out was the savory samosa. Its crisp and golden exterior hinted at the flavorful filling within, providing a delightful start to our culinary adventure. As I perused the array of other tantalizing options, I found myself faced with an intriguing challenge – the unfamiliarity of many local starters whose names eluded me. Each bite became a journey into the unknown, a delightful exploration of Arabian flavours that transcended my culinary familiarity. While the names remained a mystery, the diverse textures and aromatic spices of these local delicacies added an element of culinary intrigue, turning the dining experience into a cultural discovery that mirrored the essence of our desert safari adventure.

As the evening unfolded in the OASIS PALM desert safari camp, our culinary journey continued with a diverse array of main courses, featuring flavorful BBQ and kebabs prepared in traditional desert style. The richness of Arabian cuisine was further accentuated by the inclusion of authentic desert items, their names now fading in my memory but leaving a lingering taste of cultural authenticity. 

The dining experience was complemented by captivating shows, including the renowned Arabic belly dance and a mesmerizing fire performance, adding an extra layer of entertainment to our desert soirée. As the night embraced us with its desert charm, our tour guide ensured our safe return to the hotel in the familiar Land Cruiser, marking the end of a day filled with exhilarating adventures, cultural delights, and unforgettable moments in the heart of Dubai's desert landscape.
